Students read about Henri Matisse in the book Drawing with Scissors and learned about Matisse's expressive use of color.

Matisse was very interested in bright colors and patterns such as these wallpaper and carpet designs.

Students learned to draw the human figure by breaking the body down into basic geometric shapes. They used paper mannequins to help them visualize the human figure.


After drawing the figure, students added oil pastels.

Next they cut the figure out and glued it to patterned wrapping paper.
