Third Grade students learned about the Oregon Trail and Westward Expansion in Social Studies. During art, students learned about the kinds of quilts that were made by pioneers. Then, students a short paragraph where they imagined they were on the Oregon Trail writing in their journal. They created an illustration that they drew onto a piece of fabric with fabric markers. Finally, students glued pieces of fabric around the edge of the illustration to reinforce the concept of quilts being made from reused fabric scraps.
After the quilts were completed students were asked to write three things that they learned during this project and how they know they learned them. Students read some of the things they learned and the responses were written on the SMARTBoard.
Some responses include:
Quilt making started a long time ago
I learned how to write/draw a story
Making a quilt takes a lot of time, work and patience
A quilt can tell a story
It is important to use your time wisely so you can finish.
