The wolf is revered by the Yu'pik People. It was believed that the Orca Whale turned into a Wolf during the winter months. The Yu'pik people believed that the Whale threatened to eat all of the reindeer if the reindeer did not agree to be caught by the hunters.
As a thank you to the whale, the hunters would ceremonially though a piece of reindeer back into the ocean.
